Fifteen years ago, the founders of KOZA DEREZA began exploring the profound meanings behind Ukrainian embroidery. During this journey, they discovered the works of Volodymyr Pidhirnyak, who authored a book on the art of coding in Ukrainian embroidery. Volodymyr’s grandmother, a cryptographer for the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), encoded secret messages into embroidered patterns worn by couriers, successfully bypassing Soviet intelligence. In 2009, Volodymyr visited Ternopil and conducted a workshop on this unique coding technique for us. Since then, we have encoded countless names, wishes, and prayers into our embroidery.
The ornament of the matching embroidered shirts NEZLAMNI (“Unbreakable”) features words that have always been a spiritual foundation for Ukrainians: “Struggle” and “Freedom.”
