Suleiman I, known as Suleiman the Magnificent (Kanuni Sultan Süleyman), was one of the most prominent sultans of the Ottoman Empire. Hürrem Sultan, also known as Roxelana, was of Ukrainian origin, born in the lands of present-day Western Ukraine. At a young age, she was taken captive. Later, entering the Sultan’s palace, she rose from a slave to the official wife of the Sultan — an unprecedented event in the empire’s history.

Her intelligence, determination, and inner strength caught Suleiman’s attention. He named her Hürrem — “the one who brings joy” — and dedicated poetic verses to her, calling her his delight, his light, and his peace.

Hürrem Sultan actively engaged in charitable activities, initiating the construction of mosques, hospitals, fountains, and madrasas — landmarks that remain part of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural heritage. She also possessed remarkable diplomatic talent and played the role of Suleiman’s advisor in important state matters.

Together, Suleiman and Hürrem became not only husband and wife but also a strong alliance of two personalities who influenced the course of history.
